This valve is typically located underground, with a vertical or angled outlet above the ground. Firefighters use special wrenches to open or close the valve. There are typically two types of outlets found on fire hydrants: a pumper outlet and one or more hose outlets. The pumper outlet is used to connect large-diameter hoses directly to fire trucks. The hose outlets are used for connecting smaller hoses to supply water to firefighting equipment.
