Smoke detectors use optical or ionization technology to sense smoke particles in the air. Optical smoke detectors utilize a light source and a sensor to detect the scattering of light caused by smoke particles. Ionization smoke detectors use a small amount of radioactive material to ionize the air and create an electrical current. When smoke particles disrupt the current, the alarm is triggered.
